Low Fat Chocolate Cake Recipe

(C-A-Recipes.com)

Usually cakes and healthy diets do not go well together, but this low fat chocolate cake is an exception to the rule. This dark, rich looking, low fat, no cholesterol chocolate cake is very healthy and has no saturated fats at all. So this is a very good dessert for someone who likes healthy foods and cakes. To further reduce the amounts of fat, we have deliberately omitted the frosting.

Ingredients:
1. All-purpose flour – 9 oz (2 cups)
2. Baking soda – 1/2 tsp
3. Baking powder – 1 tsp
4. Salt - 1/2 tsp
5. Cocoa powder – 4.5 oz (1/2 cup)
6. Brown sugar – 16 oz (2 cups)
7. Vegetable oil – 4 oz (1/2 cup)
8. Skimmed milk – 8 oz (1 cup)
9. Egg whites - 4
10. Vanilla extract – 1 tsp
11. Nuts of your choice (Optional)

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 350°F or 175°C.
2. Lightly grease and line an 8 x 8 x 2-inch baking pan with baking paper. OR you can use a silicone baking pan that does not need any greasing or lining, thus reducing the fat even more.
3. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt and set aside.
4. Beat the egg whites in a separate bowl until very frothy and stiff peaks form.
5. Whisk together the sugar, vegetable oil and skimmed milk. Stir in the vanilla.
6. Into this mixture, fold in the flour mixture and egg whites a little at a time alternatively and whisk until an evenly smooth batter is formed.
7. Mix in some nuts of your choice if you like.
8 Pour this into the prepared pan and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.
9. Allow it to cool in the pan for some time before turning onto the rack for complete cooling. Frost the cake and serve.
10. Frosting: Cream margarine and sugar. Mix in the cocoa powder, skimmed milk and vanilla and mix well to a smooth spreading consistency.

Important Points
*In this cake only vegetable oil is used, so there are no saturated fats at all.
*Also only egg whites are used so no cholesterol from egg yolks in it.
*Instead of making the cake from the scratch you can also us e1 pack of chocolate mix.

Hope you love eating this delicious cake.

So sugar does not count?
by: Anonymous

2 cups of sugar - that is going to metabolize into fat, so you may as well enjoy the real thing.

Surprisingly good
by: Anonymous

Very happy with the result. Next time I would only use half amount of sugar and half the oil. I would split the mixture into 2 cake tins to make it a 2 tier cake. Very rich and moist - serving very small slices are best. Needs to be served with raspberries or strawberries & cream to counteract the sweetness.

Good easy mix and lovely height and weight
by: Duncan the baker

I have just made a two-tier sandwich chocolate cake for my wifes birthday using this recipe and its turned out very well. I reduced the sugar from 16 oz to 8 oz, and added 2 oz (50g) of good quality grated plain chocolate (75% cocoa) as recomended by another respondee as below. Split the mix between two 7" (175mm diam round sponge tins and cooked for 25 mins at 180c and its risen beautifully to give good firm but moist chocolate sponges.

Chocolate filling made of 40gr chocolate, 40 gr cocoa powder, 60 gr icing sugar, 1 tbls of sunflower oil, a little hot water and a few drops of brandy (less than half a cap) both filled and iced it nicely.

Just worked out fat content and its 14.5 grammes saturated fat for the whole cake - sliced into 8 thats a mere 1.75 grammes a slice saturated fat content. Thats a good result in my book - and a nice looking / tasting cake to boot.

get your fat facts straight!

Haven't even tried baking it, but must quibble with your low fat and no sat fat claims. 1/2 C oil is far from low fat, and even canola oil has a gram of saturated fat per tablespoon of oil.

Low Fat?????
by: Anonymous

How can this be considered "low fat" when you use 1/2 cup veg.oil? there may not be saturated fats, but still alot of fat in it. I will try it with 2/3 cup low fat yogurt instead.

One cup of sugar instead of two
by: Anonymous

I did wonder about the sugar and I decided to use only one cup instead of the two. I also added some grated chocolate and it was beautiful. I will definitely use it as my basic cake mix in the future, using one cup of sugar of course.
