Review of the 4 Hour Body By Tim Ferris – It Worked for Tim, will it work for You?

Ever since its release in December 2010, there has been a buzz around the book ‘The 4 hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Weight Loss, Incredible Sex and Becoming Superhuman’ by Tim Ferris.

The book is surely popular. But is it useful? Do the strategies outlined really cause rapid weight loss, improve your sex life and transform you into a sort of cross between Spiderman and Ironman, capable of amazing physical feats?

Does It Really Work?

The answer is dual – it’s yes and no. The book does provide results in parts. But the ‘questionable’ part is lack of scientific evidence backing some of the techniques discussed.

Most of the strategies Ferris has put forth are plain common sense (which we knew anyway) or strategies that worked for him personally (or worked for someone he knew). But will they work for you? And that is indeed the million dollar question. To be fair, let me make it clear that the book is not all ‘hype’.

In fact, this 500 page plus book has so much information on so many topics, that you will surely find something useful for you. Let us examine some of the core and interesting areas in The 4 Hour Body.

Rapid Weight Loss

You must have heard countless of times that there is no such thing as ‘rapid’ weight loss and really no substitute for hard work.

So has Ferris stumbled on to some magic formula that guarantees ‘rapid weight loss’ without working for it? Well not really, because his rapid weight loss program is based on a ’Slow Carb’ diet that vetoes all forms of carbohydrates like the obvious white bread, rice, potatoes etc and also the ‘healthy’ carbs like whole grains and oats.

Fruits are a no and so are dairy products with the exception of cottage cheese. But wine is allowed as are specific vegetables. This diet is guaranteed to help you lose ’20 pounds in 30 days without exercise’.

And it will definitely give the desired results, because you are totally avoiding carbs that get converted to sugar in the body. The diet does allow one ‘no holds barred’ day in the week, where you can indulge to your heart’s content.

The question you have to ask yourself is though effective, is it sustainable? Can you make such a diet a long term practice? The decision is yours.

How About the Sex?

Perhaps the claim of a 15 minute orgasm is the single biggest reason for the interest in this book. Sorry. There is no scientific basis for this and the book talks mainly about ‘hand pleasuring’ that may or may not be your cup of tea. If this was your main motivation to buy the 4 hour Body, then don’t.

Sleep Well

The 4 Hour Body offers some really useful tips for sleeping well. Some of the strategies Tim Ferris has outlined here like using a or Travel Humidifier are good and effective in improving the quality of your sleep that is an essential component of overall good health.

He also talks about taking six 20 minute power naps throughout the day, which let you feel refreshed with a mere 2 hour sleep at night. Not very convincing and a little unpractical, I felt. But of course, you can try it and see how it works for you.

Some Interesting Tidbits

Throughout The 4 Hour Body, Tim Ferris offers interesting little tidbits. For instance, he says that taking extremely cold showers triggers hormones that promote fat burning and weight loss.

There are recommendations on supplements for weight loss, building muscle, promoting sleep etc. which you may consider taking. And finally the book talks about ‘exotic’ procedures like plasma cell injections, topical testosterone patches etc. for injury reversal.

Interesting Read with some very valuable information

The book is more a fast paced thriller than regular fitness/weight loss book. You will definitely enjoy reading The 4 Hour Body, but we come back to the question – it worked for Tim, will it work for you?

Surely, it will in parts and they may be a good enough reason to buy The 4 Hour Body. I would highly recommend this book for its nutrition part if you can sustain it.

I'm a big fan of his first book 4-Hour Workweek and both books are a great read, useful in parts, and most important, very inspiring to make some changes in your life.
